US President Donald Trump called on New York Mayor-elect Zahran Mamdani to show greater courtesy in dealing with him, considering that Mamdani began his term with a “bad start.”

In an interview with Fox News on Wednesday evening, Trump commented on the speech given by Mamdani – the first Muslim to be elected mayor of New York City – after his victory in the mayoral elections, saying:

“He was very angry, and he was definitely angry with me.”

Trump added:

“I think he should be nice to me, because I’m the one who approves of a lot of things about him. He got off to a bad start.”

The American President continued:

“He has to respect Washington, because without that respect he won’t succeed. I want him to be successful. I love New York.”

Earlier the same day, Trump launched a sharp attack on Mamdani, saying:

“We lost part of our sovereignty last night in New York, but don’t worry, we will deal with it.”

According to the unofficial preliminary results issued by the Associated Press, Zahran Mamdani (34 years old) received 50.4% of the votes, ahead of independent candidate Andrew Cuomo, who received 41.6%, while Republican Party candidate Curtis Slea came third with 7.2%.
