In a meeting described as friendly and strategic, King Abdullah II of Jordan and Iraqi President Abdul Latif Rashid, on Tuesday, held extensive discussions in the capital, Amman, that dealt with ways to enhance economic cooperation between the two countries and the latest regional developments, amid the delicate political and economic conditions the region is witnessing.

Renewed economic cooperation

According to a statement issued by the Jordanian Royal Court, the two sides stressed the strength of the fraternal and historical relations linking the Jordanian and Iraqi peoples, and stressed their keenness to build on them and develop them in a way that serves the interests of both countries.

The discussions dealt with ways to expand economic, trade and investment cooperation, follow up on joint electrical interconnection projects, in addition to facilitating transport and trade exchange between Amman and Baghdad.

The two leaders also discussed mechanisms for enhancing economic integration in the fields of energy, transportation and trade, which contributes to supporting sustainable growth in both countries. King Abdullah II stressed the importance of continuing to build on the cooperation achieved, especially in the regional infrastructure and energy projects that bring together Jordan, Iraq, and Egypt within the “New Levant.”

Regional developments and the Gaza crisis

The two leaders also discussed the latest regional developments, stressing the need to support peaceful solutions to regional crises in a way that guarantees the sovereignty and territorial integrity of countries and enhances security and stability in the Middle East.

Regarding the situation in the Gaza Strip, King Abdullah stressed the need to commit to implementing the cessation of war agreement in all its stages, and to stop the Israeli escalation in the occupied West Bank, stressing the importance of intensifying Arab and international efforts to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza and removing restrictions imposed on the entry of relief.

He also warned of the danger of unilateral Israeli measures against the Palestinians, and the denial of historical rights in Jerusalem and the Islamic and Christian holy sites, stressing that the Hashemite custodianship of the holy places in Jerusalem is “a red line that cannot be touched.”

Supportive Iraqi position

For his part, Iraqi President Abdul Latif Rashid expressed his country’s keenness to consolidate its historical and fraternal relations with Jordan, stressing that Baghdad seeks to enhance economic and political integration with Amman in a way that serves the interests of the two peoples and contributes to achieving security, stability and development in the region.

He added that Iraq continues to support all efforts aimed at alleviating the suffering of the Palestinian people and stopping the war that destroyed Gaza, pointing out the importance of activating the joint Arab role in facing the current challenges.

Background: The recent Gaza agreement

On October 10, 2025, Hamas and Israel reached an agreement to stop the genocide in Gaza, which included the exchange of Palestinian and Israeli prisoners, based on an American plan drawn up by President Donald Trump.

The war, which began on October 8, 2023 and lasted for two full years, left 68,531 Palestinian martyrs and 170,402 wounded, most of them women and children, and comprehensive destruction that affected about 90 percent of the civilian infrastructure in the Strip, according to official Palestinian and UN statistics.

Partnership prospects

The meeting between the two leaders is seen as a new step towards deepening the Jordanian-Iraqi partnership in light of the economic and political challenges facing the region, and the two countries’ desire to achieve regional integration and joint stability, while maintaining a unified position towards the Palestinian issue as it is the central Arab issue.
