A Soviet space probe falls to Earth.. What are the dangers of “space waste”?
The incident of the Soviet probe “Cosmos 482” falling to Earth passed safely and safely, as expected, but it was an occasion to warn of an increasing danger called “space waste.”
In 1972, the Soviet Union launched its probe designed to land on the planet Venus as part of the space race with America during the Cold War era, but a malfunction in the rocket it carried led to the failure of the mission, leaving it stuck in an elliptical orbit around the Earth for more than half a century.
During the past 10 days, there has been global interest in its return to Earth, after space debris tracking stations around the world revealed that it was close to penetrating the Earth’s atmosphere, and it fell on Saturday, the tenth of May, over the Indian Ocean, west of Jakarta, Indonesia, without causing any significant damage, as expected, according to the Russian space agency Roscosmos.
Although all expectations indicated a safe fall scenario for this probe, interest in this event reflects ongoing concern about the dangers that this type of space debris may pose to humans.
